This week I have been busy completing various quilts and working on my new cat design.  I have been commissioned to make the design as a cushion but I thought while I was doing it I would make another separate one as a wall hanging. I found some lovely mottled grey fabric which was just perfect for the cat; the fabric has a subtle gradation from one edge to the other so I was able to get a bit of variation in the colours. I used invisible machine applique to construct the design on a background stabilizer which I removed afterwards.

A close up of the cat’s face, I’ve used more detail on the wall hanging than the cushion because it won’t be receiving any wear and tear.

  1. Your cats are perfect! Love how you incorporate your own naturescapes into your pieces, really lovely and fun to see another part of a quilters world. Sharyn/KalamaQuilts

  2. Thanks for your comments Sharyn. It’s the first time that I’ve tried doing any sort of realistic cat portraits. It is good living in this part of the world and being able to find so much to inspire me.

  3. I had to look twice, at first I thought the cat was real. Beautiful work, I espescially like the wallhanging. Looks like the cat is smiling.

  4. I was pleased with how it turned out and when I put the cushion on the sofa it was almost like having another cat in the house :-)

  5. The kitties are great! They look like they’re real! In fact, I had a black cat named Max who looked just like these!

  6. Whoa, I think that’s Boris, my black cat!
